(New York, NY) — The Rent Guidelines Board gave the green light Tuesday night to raise rents 2% to 4% for one-year leases and 4% to 6.5% for two-year leases. The tenants, who live in rent stabilized apartments are upset that they are facing a rent hike for the third year in row. Landlords are also unhappy with the board’s decision. They say the rent hike wont come close to covering their costs. The Rent Guidelines decision is a preliminary one, as tenants and apartment owners will have a series of hearings where they can contest the recommendations by the board.

Two Rent Guidelines board members representing tenants walked out during Tuesday’s meeting, calling the process a sham. By a vote of 5-to-2 with two abstentions, the board voted to recommend an increase. Mayor Adams says a six-point-five percent increase goes far beyond what is reasonable. A final vote is set for June 17th.
