O.J. Simpson’s Estate Changes Mind, Will Pay

Jul 20, 2017; Lovelock, NV, USA; O.J. Simpson attends a parole hearing at Lovelock Correctional Center. Simpson is serving a nine to 33 year prison term for a 2007 armed robbery and kidnapping conviction. Simpson's lawyer Malcolm LaVergne is seen on the left.

(Las Vegas, NV) – O.J. Simpson’s estate is changing course. Attorney Malcolm LaVerge — the executor of Simpson’s estate — originally said he would fight to avoid paying the Goldman family any money following a 1997 civil trial judgment. Although Simpson was acquitted of murder in 1995, he was ordered to pay $33.5 million to the families of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, LaVerge said “I can tell you in advance, Fred Goldman’s claim will be accepted. And his claim will be handled in accordance with Nevada law.” This is a stark contrast to earlier comments in which he said he would do “everything in (his) capacity” to prevent any payment of funds from Simpson’s estate.

So why was LaVergne originally so aggressive and arguably hostile in his comments? “Within an hour of knowing that OJ died, he started talking s–t,” Simpson’s attorney said while discussing the Goldman family’s lawyer. “My advocate instinct, [it] was, ‘Oh you’re gonna keep s–tting on him even after he’s dead? Fine, you know? You get nothing.’”

Simpson avoided paying most of the judgment while he was alive, allegedly by insisting he be paid in cash for things like autograph signings and golf outings.
