(Washington, DC) – Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky is calling on Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson to resign. This makes him the second Congressional Republican to make such a demand, after Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene first pursued a leadership change.
Massie, in calling on Johnson to resign the speaker’s chair, has announced he is co-sponsoring a resolution first offered up by Taylor Greene. Conservatives have expressed disappointment for Speaker Johnson after he took up the gavel in replacement of Kevin McCarthy, a California Republican who only briefly held the role of speaker. Johnson has caught the ire of conservatives because he’s backed foreign spending packages for the war between Ukraine and Russia, as well as for Israel — as the war with Hamas in Gaza rages on.
The motion that aims to oust Johnson is the same maneuver that led to McCarthy’s removal in October of last year. It’s not clear at this point when Greene and Massie could look to move the measure to a vote.
