FBI Opens Criminal Inquiry into Baltimore Bridge Collapse

(Baltimore, MD) – The FBI has opened a criminal investigation into last month’s bridge collapse in Baltimore. According to reports the inquiry centers on the crew of the cargo ship Dali, and whether its crew members were aware the ship had “problems” before leaving port on the morning of March 26.

The Washington Post first noted the federal investigation, and that FBI agents recently accessed the cargo ship to conduct searches. It was during the early morning hours when the ship in question apparently lost power, then struck one of the support pillars of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The span then fell into the harbor waters, killing six workers who had been part of a crew filling in potholes.

Also Monday, lawyers for the victim’s families announced they’ve launched their own independent investigation of that day’s events. Speaking at a press conference, attorneys representing two of the workers who died — and one who survived — maintained their clients received no advance warning of the imminent collapse. That’s despite the fact the ship’s crew radioed harbor authorities and got cops to close down the span to motor vehicle traffic — likely saving lives.
