(Elizabeth, NJ) — Firefighters were busy battling multiple brush fires in Elizabeth Tuesday evening. Smoke from the fires near Exit 13 of the New Jersey Turnpike could be seen for miles, and caused traffic delays. The fires were burning close to Newark Liberty Airport, but runways were kept open. Crews were out for hours trying to bring the flames under control. There were no injuries reported. Fire investigators think a car fire may have set off the brush fire, but they are not totally sure.
State Environmental Protection officials are reminding the public to remain vigilant during the height of wildfire season that lasts through May.
