(New York, NY) – Millions of Americans know them well, the Cicadas those noisy backyard bugs are back. For the first time in more than 200 years, trillions of two types of cicadas, brood XIX and XIII– have come up from the ground simultaneously. The one to two-inch-long bugs possess sturdy bodies, bulging compounded red eyes and membranous wings with a three-inch wingspan. The EPA says Cicadas are not harmful to humans and pets. They are actually a nutritious food source for birds.
Entomologists say cicadas are expected to start emerging in May. Swarms make their way out from underground every 13-years. Though the sound may be annoying, they aren’t actually bad for your yard, they can provide natural aeration that can be good for fertilizer.
