(Newark, NJ) – Artificial intelligence is being explored for a number of applications, including things like art, finance, retail — and transportation. That’s perhaps especially true in terms of safety. And New Jersey Transit just received a federal grant so they can put some money into exploring how AI can help.
NJ Transit officials say they’re working to use this grant money in order to use AI and develop a safer system for rail grade crossings. Rutgers University’s Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation will work with the transit agency on the project. The grant provides NJ Transit with $6 million.
The overarching goal is to help cut down on or prohibit entirely things like pedestrians being hit by trains as well as vehicle strikes. Not only are both of those instances dangerous, they’re also costly in terms of equipment and time lost to delays. NJ Transit officials say the use of AI in this project will allow for the collection and analysis of previously “unattainable” safety data.
