These Cargo Bikes Are Coming To NYC Streets

syndication-journal-sentinel-32

Some electric cargo bicycles are capable of hauling up to 800 pounds. The bicycles pictured cost around $12,000.

(New York, NY) – In a bid to crack down on the proliferation of delivery trucks, the New York City Department of Transportation is trying to “go green.” The government agency just gave its approval for the use of pedal-assisted e-cargo bicycles on city streets. Some say the bikes — which can carry up to 800 pounds — could reduce the number of delivery trucks being used.

Under the DOT’s new rules, e-cargo bikes must follow a 15 mile per hour speed limit. They also can’t be left unattended on sidewalks. Also, commercial bicycle loading zones will be established — with specifically dedicated curb space for the loading and unloading of goods from e-cargo bikes.
