(New York, NY) — Former Connecticut Senator and Vice Presidential candidate Joe Lieberman has died at the age of 82. The cause was complications from a fall, according to a statement from his family. Lieberman’s family was by his side when he died Wednesday afternoon in New York City. He recently spoke out, criticizing Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for demanding early elections in Israel. Lieberman nearly won the vice presidency on the Democratic ticket with Al Gore in the 2000 Presidential race. He was the first Jewish candidate of a major party on a national ticket.
Lieberman was deeply rooted in foreign affairs, becoming one of the legislative fathers of the Department of Homeland Security. In recent years he had become involved in the No Labels party. A political organization created with the hopes of ending the gridlock in Washington between Democrats and Republicans. Lieberman told Frank Morano, on The Other Side of Midnight last week that he was helping No Labels put together a presidential ticket.
Lieberman’s funeral is taking place today at Congregation Agudath Sholom in his hometown, of Stamford. A public memorial service will happen at a later date.
