(Raleigh, NC) — Pro-Palestinian protesters interrupted President Biden’s remarks on healthcare in North Carolina on Tuesday, in an exchange of words that had some demonstrators giving the President the thumbs up. During an event in Raleigh, protesters shouted “what about healthcare in Gaza” and “hospitals in Gaza are being bombed.” Biden responded to the crowd, saying the protesters have a point and “a lot more care” needs to get into Gaza. Those demonstrators were calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. Protestors have frequently interrupted Democratic events since the war began in October. Biden is facing growing pressure to push Israel to scale back its military operations in Gaza as the civilian death toll rises.
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin says the civilian death toll in Gaza is “far too high.” Austin made the comment Tuesday in a meeting with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and said the amount of humanitarian aid reaching Gaza is “far too low.” The Pentagon chief says there needs to be an immediate increase in assistance in Gaza to avert famine, and he called for expanding aid deliveries by land. Israel has blocked the UN’s Palestinian relief agency from making aid deliveries in northern Gaza, calling the agency, a front for Hamas.
