(New York, NY) — A straphanger is dead after he was shoved into the path of a subway at a station in East Harlem Monday night. Eyewitnesses say the deadly push, that took place at the 125th Street station came out of nowhere. Police have not identified the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene. They did arrest the man who allegedly pushed the rider to his death. He is 24-year-old Carlton Mcpherson, who police say has a criminal record, including an arrest for assault last October.
The deadly shove comes on the same day the NYPD began a crackdown on subway fare evasion. NYPD Transit Chief Michael Kemper says “Operation Fair Play” will be focusing on making sure people pay their fair share at the turnstile. Kemper says hundreds of cops will be sent underground. Police say fare evasion often leads to other crimes in the subway.
