(Baltimore, MD) — Rescue crews have suspended the search until Wednesday morning for any survivors after the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed, when it was hit by a container ship. Authorities say six workers on the bridge who were part of an overnight construction bridge are presumed dead. The collision took place around 1:30 Tuesday morning. Firefighters say there were at least seven cars and a truck on the span when it collapsed into the Patapsco River. Police and firefighters found two people alive in the river when they arrived at the scene. Sonar is being used to look for others. Firefighters believe a number of cars are submerged under the surface of the river. Baltimore officials say they are looking for up to 20 individuals.

The cargo ship that hit the bridge flies under a Singapore flag. It’s not clear why it slammed into a support beam. No one on the ship was hurt. It sits now under the tangled mess of the bridge. People who live nearby say they heard the crash, which they described as a bomb going off.
