(Trenton, NJ) — New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy’s has dropped out of the race for U.S. Senate. Murphy, who made the announcement in a video posted online Sunday night says she did not want to be part of a divisive campaign among Democrats. She was set to face off against fellow Democrat, and South Jersey Congressman Andy Kim in a June primary. She says she wants New Jersey Democrats focused on beating Donald Trump in November. Her sudden withdrawal makes Congressman Andy Kim the favorite to pick up the Democratic nomination. The senate seat is held right now by Senator Bob Menendez. He is facing a bribery trial in May, and says if he does run again it will be as an Independent candidate.

Just last week, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop said he made a mistake in his initial endorsement of Tammy Murphy in the U.S. Senate race and switched his support to Congressman Andy Kim. In making the switch, Fulop urged Murphy to drop out of the race. Fulop says he made his decision after watching the county conventions and decided Kim is the better candidate and has a better chance of success in the general election. Fulop is one of three candidates for governor next year, when incumbent Phil Murphy leaves office due to term limits.
