(New York, NY) — Manhattan’s largest school district has voted in favor of a resolution that opens the possibility of transgender athletes being banned from girl’s sports. Community Education Council District Two voted last night for a resolution that orders the city’s Department of Education to allow a public review of its policy which lets transgender girls play female sports. Some spoke out criticizing the move as discriminatory against transgender students. Others said transgender athletes may have a biological advantage and be a risk to a level playing field.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman is taking action to protect what’s believed to be the first in the nation ban on transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports. The New York Attorney General issued a cease and desist order over the ban, but Blakeman met with his lawyers who say its constitutional. Blakeman says he’s awaiting a federal judge’s decision after Nassau County filed a lawsuit against the attorney general’s order. The county is also fighting a lawsuit against the New York Civil Liberties Union. Blakeman says banning biological men from competing in female sports is not anti-trans, but instead protects female athletes.
