(Tallahassee, FL) — Efforts to get U.S. citizens out of Haiti will continue today, with at least one state official in Florida saying there’s reason for optimism. Two rescue flights from Haiti were supposed to leave yesterday, but plans fell through. Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie says they were close, but the situation on the ground is extremely volatile with gang violence having plunged the Caribbean nation into chaos. Guthrie, though, says people were planning to work overnight to make sure today’s flights get off the ground and those seeking safety are brought back to America.
Nearly one-thousand Americans in Haiti have reached out to the U.S. government for help. Those Americans have filled out a “crisis intake form,” which helps the U.S. track and help make sure those citizens get information on consular services and evacuations. Prime Minister of the Caribbean nation Ariel Henry resigned last week in a climax of escalating unrest and gang control.
