(Wantagh, NY) — Police say an elderly Long Island man made a pact with his wife, who was ill to kill her and then end his own life. Cops say 74-year-old Anthony Heaton carried through on stabbing his 82-year-old wife Mary to death. but decided not to take his own life over the weekend. Heaton is behind bars awaiting a hearing before a judge.

“Newsday” reports he called one of the couple’s three adult children to tell them that he had killed their mom. That’s how police ended up at their Wantagh home for a wellness check on Saturday. Cops say Heaton admitted to stabbing his wife of 40 years. Her body was found on the floor in the home. EMTs were called in to try and save her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors say Mary Heaton’s health had been going downhill for years, and that her husband had seemed overwhelmed with taking care of her. Police say there was no history of domestic violence between the couple.
