Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th, the day that Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, died in 461 A.D.
It became an official Christian feast day in the 17th century, celebrating the culture, heritage and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland and is observed by many faiths, including the Catholic Church, the Church of Ireland, the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Lutheran Church.
Interestingly, Saint Patrick’s Day parades began in North America in the 18th century, but not in Ireland until the 20th century.
Today it is widely celebrated with parades, traditional Irish music and dance across the world. It is also customary to wear the color green, green accessories or shamrocks.
77 WABCRadio will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day on the Radio, in Studio 77 and on the streets of New York City with special guests, dancers and singers.
