(Mineola, NY) — A Long Island roller derby team is the first to challenge Nassau County’s transgender ban on women in sports. The Roller Rebels, who accept women of all orientations and were organized in Nassau County in 2005, say they have no choice but to take legal action. This, after County Executive Bruce Blakeman issued an executive order last month prohibiting women’s teams with transgender athletes from competing at county-owned facilities which the team says makes them feel unsafe and unwelcome.
County Executive Bruce Blakeman isn’t backing down despite the NYACLU suing on the team’s behalf saying, transgender athletes should compete against other biological males or in a coed league instead of choosing “to bully” their way onto girls and women’s teams.
