(New York, NY) — A judge wants to lock up New York City’s worst landlord. Judge Jack Stoller has ordered the arrest of Daniel Ohebshalom, after he’s failed to make hundreds of court-ordered repairs at two apartment buildings in Washington Heights for more than a year. There are nearly 700 violations involved. The judge wants Ohebshalom to be held at Rikers for up-to-two-months and has asked the New York City Sheriff’s Office to bring him back from California, where they believe he lives. Public Advocate Jumaane Williams has named Ohebshalom the city’s worst landlord for two years in a row.
Tenants in Ohebshalom’s Washington Heights apartment buildings say they live with crumbling walls and ceilings, trash-filled stairwells and rats everywhere. Many say the rent is automatically taken from their bank accounts each month, as the heat rarely works and the water is not reliable. Public Advocate Jumaane Williams says he applauds the judge’s move to arrest Ohebshalom, and hopes it serves as notice to other bad new landlords.
