(New York, NY) – As he appeals the verdict in his defamation case, former President Trump has posted a $91.6 million bond. This came just days ahead of the deadline Trump faced, in which he was ordered to pay writer E. Jean Carroll $83.3 million. A jury determined Trump had sexually assaulted Carroll, and defamed her by denying he did it, in connection to an alleged rape in a Manhattan dressing room — sometime in the 1990s.
Carroll never specifically identified the year in which the alleged incident happened, but claims it took place at a Bergdorf Goodman. The bond posted by Trump will theoretically cover the judgment and penalty if his appeal is lost. Should he win the appeal, the money will be returned.
In a post written to Substack, Carroll said she would have quickly moved to seize Trump’s assets if the bond had not been posted. Referencing her attorney Roberta Kaplan, Carroll wrote: “(She) is strong enough to yank a golden toilet out of the floor at Trump Tower and toss it through the window, (but) this bond saves Robbie the trouble of showing up with US Marshals on Monday to do so.”
Earlier in the week, Judge Lewis Kaplan — of no relation to Carroll’s attorney — denied Trump’s request to delay paying the penalty.
