(Manasquan, N.J.) — The agency that runs high school sports in New Jersey says it will not overturn the results of a semi-final basketball game Tuesday night between Manasquan and Camden high schools. A Manasquan player sunk a basket to win the game, but the refs ruled the ball left his hands too late. On video review, the referees say the basket should have counted, but there are no video reviews in high school basketball in New Jersey. Camden will move onto the high school championship. The NJSIAA says it’s sorry it refs got it wrong.
Students at Manasquan high school say they are shocked that their basketball team is now done for the season. The NJSIAA rejected the school appeal of Tuesday’s game, arguing the win should be taken away from Camden high school. The NJSIAA issued a statement on Wednesday, saying the basket should have counted, but the rules are clear that once game officials leave the ‘”visual confines of the playing court” the game is over.
