(New York, NY) — There have been a slew of high profile attacks down below on the subways in the last few weeks, and now the NYPD admits crime is up 22% this year when compared with the same time last year. The NYPD says they are actually making more arrests, but they say the New Yorkers they cuff are back out on the streets too quickly to commit more crimes.

The NYPD is investigating two recent attacks at the same subway station in Queens. Over the weekend, a 31-year-old man was hit over the head with a metal pipe at the Queensboro Plaza subway stop. Police are still looking for the attacker. Cops are also looking for a straphanger who slashed a 29-year-old tourist in the neck at the same station. The victim is expected to recover. Both attacks were unprovoked. Commuters say the spike in crime has made them more uneasy riding the rails. The MTA says ridership continues to climb post pandemic.
