Why Does NYC Want To Ban Detergent Pods?

syndication-the-town-talk-3

New York City is looking into the potential ban of detergent pods, based on microplastics concerns.

(New York, NY) – New York City is looking into the potential ban of detergent pods. The pods, such as the one’s sold by Tide for washing clothes, have been ensnared in controversy before. Years ago, kids tried to go viral on social media by posting videos of themselves eating the pods. Now, the New York City Council is looking at a possible ban of the pods that are used for both laundry and dish washing machines.

On Thursday, City Councilmember James Gennaro of Queens — a Democrat — introduced the bill. He says detergent pods are a health risk because they contain microplastics. The popular alternatives to liquid or powder detergent are encased in dissolvable material that contains polyvinyl alcohol. Also known as PVAs, they’re considered pollutants as they make their way into water supplies.
