(New York, NY) — The race for former New York Congressman George Santos’s seat is heating up as early voting got underway this weekend. Newcomer Mazi Pilip is going toe to toe with former Democratic Congressman Tom Suozzi for the open seat in New York’s third congressional district. A campaign sticking point for both Suozzi and Pilip is the migrant crisis, with Pilip accusing Suozzi of wanting to fix a problem he helped create while he was in congress.
George Santos, who held the seat until he was expelled from Congress in December, says he will not be voting in the special election. Santos said on CNN Sunday that he can not bring himself to “vote for a registered Democrat, period.” Pilip, who is running on the Republican line is a registered Democrat. Santos was expelled from Congress after he was charged with 23 counts of wire fraud, identity theft and campaign finance charges.
