New York City, in a bid to solve the rat problem, continues to introduce new rules for trash containers.

(New York, NY) – New York City is planning to roll out some new garbage trucks, as the Big Apple’s war on rats continues. Mayor Adams says these are automated, side-loading garbage trucks. They’re hitting the streets four years prior to their scheduled arrival.
Adams and Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch say the goal of City Hall is to get all trash bags off the street and sidewalk. Instead, plastic containers will be used — since rats can’t tear into them like they can with a soft plastic bag.
Beginning this coming fall, all residential buildings with nine units or less need containerized trash bins, with the little wheelies attacked. After that, the program will expand to medium and large buildings. At some locations, fixed-location containers often used in Europe will be utilized. That’s for the bigger buildings.
Harlem’s Community Board 9 has a pilot program underway. The goal is to make that the city’s first district with fully-containerized trash service — by 2025.
