(New York, NY) — A 12-year-old, who fell onto the subway tracks in Brooklyn during the morning rush Tuesday, rolled his body under a platform overhang just as a train roared into the station. It’s not clear how the pre-teen found himself on the tracks at the Metropolitan Avenue stop, but his quick thinking saved his life. The operator of the train, who saw what was happening was able to slow the train down, but not before a car passed the boy.  There are a large number of stations that have the platform overhangs, but not all of them.

The MTA reports around 75 people die on the tracks every year. They have begun a pilot program that puts barriers along the edge of subway station platforms, in a bid to stop straphangers from either falling or being pushed onto the tracks.
