(Clifton, NJ) — Friends and colleagues of longtime Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik are in shock after he took his own life on Tuesday. Police say the 64-year-old Berdnik shot himself inside the bathroom of a Turkish restaurant in Clifton. He had been the county sheriff since 2011, re-elected five times. Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh says Berdnik was “America’s Sheriff” who was  an exemplary law enforcement leader and a cherished friend. Senator Cory Booker says Berdnik leaves behind a legacy of sacrifice and public service.
