(New York, NY) — Mayor Eric Adams is issuing an open call to members of the New York City Council to ride along with NYPD officers as they patrol the city. It comes after the mayor vetoed a bill Friday that would have required officers to report on every street stop. Adams believes the measure undermines community policing goals and will slow down police response times. However, City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams says the council is prepared to override the mayor’s veto, arguing that civilian complaints about officers are at the highest level in more than a decade, and there needs to be more transparency.

Mayor Adams is begging City Council members to “read this entire bill” that he vetoed. He says it would force officers to chronicle insignificant interactions with the public.  Adams needs to convince at least two council members to change their vote or the council will be able to override his veto and get the bill passed.
