(New York, NY) — Macy’s says it will close five stores and lay off around 23-hundred workers.  The stores being shut are in Arlington, Virginia; San Leandro and Simi Valley California, Tallahassee, Florida, and one in Hawaii. Macy’s says going forward they plan to open smaller stores in outdoor shopping centers and even in strip malls. The cuts come a little less than a year after Bloomingdale’s CEO Tony Spring took over the top job at Macy’s.

The cuts and closings are expected to start soon. Workers were notified of the layoffs on Thursday. Macy’s says they will begin clearance sales at the closing stores, that will run for about 12 weeks.”
