More misery for homeowners near the Passaic River

syndication-the-record-127

A van drives through a partially-flooded Fair Lawn avenue after storms hit towns across New Jersey on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.

(Little Falls, NJ) —  Lots of homeowners in North Jersey are watching and hoping for the best as the Passaic River crests today, spilling over it’s banks and flooding out homes across Passaic County.
The river is swollen from the storm that took place Sunday into Monday. Local lawmakers have begged those living in the flood zone to evacuate, so first responders don’t have to go in once they are surrounded by water. Bergen County is getting hit hard too with flooding from the Saddle River. County Executive Jim Tedesco says regular dredging of the river could prevent some of the flooding in the future.

In Wayne, New Jersey the mayor has asked homeowners in the flood zone to take advantage of a federally funded home buy-out program. Mayor Christopher Vergano says some neighborhoods have been hit over and over again by floods, so it’s time for those living so close to the water to think about moving out.
