NEW YORK, NY — Parts of New York were shaken by a small earthquake early Tuesday morning. Officials say a 1.7 magnitude earthquake apparently was centered over Astoria, Queens just after 5:30 am, shaking people out of their beds on Roosevelt Island–and knocking out power for a time. No injuries were reported and buildings were not damaged. Some residents of Manhattan and Queens reported what sounded like small explosions shortly before 6 a.m. coming from Roosevelt Island between the two boroughs. Con Ed says the earthquake most likely caused the explosions.
