(Seaford, NY) — A third grade teacher at the Maria Regina School in Seaford, Long Island says he was fired this week, because he failed to follow through on a contract that he signed that says workers must live a “Catholic lifestyle”. Michael Califano says someone had sent the school pictures of him and his boyfriend. He believes that led to the firing. Califano says he grew up in the Catholic school system, even attending Maria Regina Elementary School. He says he is a regular church goer.
Some teachers, parents and students have begun circulating a petition asking the Diocese of Rockville Centre to rehire Califano. The group also plans to hold a rally today outside Saint Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre.
