Writer, producer, and developer Norman Lear, who became an icon for addressing serious topics in humorous sitcoms as “All in the Family” and “Sanford and Son,” has died at the age of 101.
A post on his Facebook page read, “It is with profound sadness and love that we announce the passing of Norman Lear, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Norman passed away peacefully on Dec 5, 2023, surrounded by his family as we told stories and sang songs until the very end.”
Lear was a political activist who funded progressive causes as part of the so-called Malibu Mafia, an informal group of wealthy American Jewish men.
This group was best known for donating money to liberal and progressive causes and politicians during the 1960s-1990s.
Lear received five Emmy Awards and two Peabody Awards over the course of his career. In 2017, he was a Kennedy Center Honors recipient.
In his last interview, he said, there were more than half a dozen productions in the works.
“I love it,” he said.
Information on funeral arrangements have yet to be released.
