The MTA wants congestion pricing in effect by spring 2024
(New York, NY) – Details of the MTA’s Congestion Pricing Plan are being leaked, and it looks like it will cost motorists an additional $15 to enter Manhattan south of 60th Street. The plan is expected to go into effect this coming spring. There will be a discount for people using certain bridges and tunnels. For example, drivers crossing into Manhattan via the Holland, Lincoln, Queens-Midtown, and Hugh Carey tunnels will get $5 off the congestion pricing toll. But crossing the George Washington Bridge won’t get you any discount.
Commercial trucks will pay a variable congestion pricing toll — varying between $24 and $26 depending on their weight. Traveling in the congestion pricing zone between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM the following day will be 75% off.
Several lawmakers, including New Jersey Congressman Josh Gottheimer and Staten Island Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis, have spoken out in opposition to the plan. Staten Island’s Borough President Vito Fossella has filed a lawsuit against the MTA in response, as has New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. In a statement, Murphy calls the leaked details of the MTA’s plan unfair. The collected funds — estimated at $1 billion annually by the MTA — will purportedly be used to repair the city’s subway system.
