(New York, NY) — A man accused of opening fire inside a midtown subway station says he was trying to stop a robbery. Cops say 43-year-old John Rote was arrested after allegedly trying to stop a mugging by firing shots inside the 49th Street-7th Avenue station Tuesday night. Police say a straphanger was trying to mug a woman, and that’s when Rote pulled out a gun and fired into the air. Rote faces several charges including reckless endangerment. The would-be mugger, who has a history with the NYPD, was arrested. No one was injured.
