(New York, NY) – Studies show that over half of adult smokers in New York City prefer menthol cigarettes – but proposed legislation could force them to kick the habit, or go for non-flavored tobacco.
US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, New York’s junior senator, was in Harlem on Monday in a bid to gain support and push the legislation forward. She stood alongside other elected officials and said menthol cigarettes are especially dangerous. Senator Gillibrand says this is because they’re so addictive and even harder to quit that other cigarettes. Last month, the FDA sent proposed rules to the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, which will be reviewed.
