(Jersey City, NJ) – The debate over marijuana use continues in New Jersey, as although it’s now legal for recreational use, smoking weed remains a gray area for police officers in the Garden State. Jersey City Mayor Stephen Fulop is among the elected officials who say cops should not be able to smoke while off duty. He says it’s because there’s no way to properly test blood or saliva so as to determine when weed was used. This arguably opens Jersey City and the state to liability issues — not to mention potentially questionable judgment from officers if they were under the influence while on duty.

As the debate heats up, legal action is being taken against the state. That’s because one officer was previously fired for using cannabis while off duty — although the officer in questioned has since been reinstated.
