(New York, NY) — A cyclist is in the hospital with serious injuries after getting hit by a driver’s vehicle fleeing police in Manhattan.
Police were chasing a Mercedes-Benz through the East Village and West Village yesterday when the vehicle hit a cyclist by Houston and McDougal streets. The NYPD was conducting a firearms investigation involving a group of gun suspects before the vehicle took off and hit the cyclist, after refusing to pull over.
The driver eventually exited the vehicle and ran.
The chase and cyclist injury comes just one day after the NYPD said there’s been an uptick in car chases because they are targeting dangerous criminals who run from cops.
“We are not letting you walk away. We will be compassionate, we will be kind, we will give people breaks. But breaking the law, guns, shootings, gang members, robberies with these cars and bikes — we are not having it anymore. It’s over,” said NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell to NBC news.
The cyclist was taken to the hospital and is in serious, but stable condition.
