(New York, NY) — President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will visit the wildfire ravaged Hawaiian island of Maui on Monday.
The White House says the president and first lady will meet with first responders, survivors and local officials.
The wildfire’s death toll has risen to 106, but officials expect that number to rise as cadaver dogs continue to search the area. The blaze that tore through the town of Lahaina is the deadliest wildfire in modern U.S. history, while also destroying 2,700 structures in Lahaina with an estimated loss of $5.6 billion.
The announcement of Biden’s visit to Maui comes after he has faced criticism from some conservatives about his response to the wildfire.
