Lawsuit Filed Nine Days After Crane Collapse

Smoke rises from a construction crane that caught fire in Manhattan, Wednesday, July 26, 2023, in New York. The crane lost its long arm, which smashed against a nearby building, dangled and then plummeted to the street as people ran for their lives on the sidewalk below. Some people suffered minor injuries, but no one died, according to Mayor Eric Adams .(AP Photo/Seth Wenig)

(New York, NY) —  One NYC native is wasting no time to file the first civil lawsuit since the crane collapse just nine days ago.

Marcy Olin, a 59-year-old resident of Manhattan says she “braced herself in terror believing she was going to die” when she saw the burning crane falling as she sat in her car, according to the lawyers. The lawsuit says parts of the crane landed on her car that morning, causing severe emotional distress.

The collapse, which happened in the early hours of the morning, was caused by a fire hundreds of feet in the air. Authorities say six people faced minor injuries— two firefighters and four civilians– but no life threatening injuries were reported. In efforts to uphold safety, first responders evacuated all the nearby buildings in the area.

Olin and her husband are suing several construction companies, the crane company, and the operator of the crane for an unspecified amount.
