(New York, NY) – Beloved Hollywood star dead at 70.

Paul Ruebens, known for his role as Pee-wee Herman, passed away on Sunday evening years after his cancer diagnosis.

“Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness,” in a statement posted to his Facebook.

Since the 1980s the late comedic actor performed as a TV star in children shows. His widely loved character Pee-wee Herman landed a film with Tim Burton in 1985 titled “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” which was a big success commercially. Three years later, the star landed another film and later shifted over to a CBS television show around the 90’s.

Rubens has been fighting cancer for years, keeping his health private while still entertaining.

“Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”

On Instagram, Rubens wrote in a statement after his death, “Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing for the last six years.”

“I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you,” concluded Rubens.
