The Yankees fell to the first place Baltimore Orioles in the rubber match 9-3 last night in what was a bloodbath for starting pitcher Luis Severino from the get-go. He was rocked for seven runs in the first inning alone and in the end surrendered all nine runs on ten hits.
Sevy didn’t hold back from criticizing himself saying “I feel like I’m the worst pitcher in the game” in the postgame interview. The 29 year old righty hurler is sporting a 2-5 record with an ERA of 7.49 thus far this season. It has been a brutal month of July for him as well as he has a 1-3 record with an 11.22 ERA, and has given up seven homers.
The bats struggled to pick up the slack of the poor pitching as the Bombers struck out a season high 18 times…there are only 27 outs in a baseball game. Executing with runners in scoring position has also been a big issue for the offense that went 2-for-11 with RISP and left 10 men stranded on base. Entering last night’s game the Yanks had a batting average of .238 with runners in scoring position which is the fourth worst in the league.
Manager Aaron Boone told the media following the game “Outside of the strikeouts, I thought at-bats were building off of last night. I thought we grinded out really well. We made it really tough on Kremer. We couldn’t finish it off”.
The Yankees look to bounce back against the Tampa Bay Rays tonight in the Bronx at 7:05 PM.
