O’Connor, the gifted Irish singer-songwriter who became a superstar in her mid-20s but was known as much for her private struggles and provocative actions as for her fierce and expressive music, has died at 56. Sinead O’Connor
(Dublin) – Pop singer Sinead O’Connor has died at the age of 56. The Irish Times first reported her passing. No cause of death has been reported. She lost her 17-year-old son Shane to suicide last year. O’Connor was perhaps best known for her cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U”. Her final message on Twitter referenced parents’ dealing with that kind of grief.
It was back in 1992 when she generated significant controversy after ripping up a photo of Pope John Paul II while appearing on SNL. She later said it was a commentary against the Catholic Church.
