Port Newark cargo ship fire
(Newark, NJ) – Officials say the deadly cargo ship fire that claimed the lives of two Newark firefighters is now contained. The ship, docked at Port Newark, had been listing and at risk of sinking in recent days. Now, the listing is currently out of the danger zone. The immense amount of water used during firefighting efforts led to the sinking concerns.
For now, crews are still on scene, focusing on keeping the ship’s deck cool in a bid to avoid the fire reigniting.
Meanwhile, funeral services are planned for both Augusto Acabou and Wayne Brooks Junior, who were killed last Wednesday night while battling the overnight fire. Newark fire officials note their wake and funeral masses will be held later this week at Newark’s Cathedral Basilica of Sacred Heart.
