(New York, NY) – The New York City Police Department is in need of a new commissioner, with Keechant Sewell set to step down in the coming days. At the same time, Mayor Eric Adams has yet to announce her replacement. That’s gotten the rumor mill heated up, and some names are starting to emerge.

According to the New York Post, First Deputy Commissioner Edward Caban is one of the top candidates. That’s not so surprising, given his extensive history as a uniformed police officer. If he gets the nod, Caban would make history as the first Latino top cop in NYPD history. But he’s not alone on the shortlist: Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch is also said to be in the running. Despite never being a cop, she did serve as the NYPD’s stats chief, and routinely delivered analysis during monthly crime meetings.

City Hall tells 77 WABC, specifically in response to the Tisch rumors, that she’s doing a great job as sanitation commissioner. An heir to the Tisch family fortune, Tisch began her professional career with the NYPD in 2008. Her family are part owners of the New York Giants and the Loews Corporation.
