(New York, NY) – After smoke from Canadian wildfires led to hazy, orange-sky conditions in New York City earlier this month, more of the same could be headed our way later this week. Governor Kathy Hochul warns air quality is expected to reach unhealthy levels as soon as Wednesday, with the thicker smoke expected to hit the Big Apple on Thursday.
N-95 masks will be distributed statewide, as they’re said to help filter out tiny particulates, making it easier to breathe. Governor Hochul blames the wildfires on climate change, but others say poor forestry management and a lack of proscribed burns from the Canadian government are also factors.
