(New York, NY) – Mayor Eric Adams has retracted his pledge to house migrants in Gracie Mansion on the Upper East Side, citing undisclosed legal obstacles. He argues that the “symbolism” of his offer is what truly matters.

According to numbers provided by City Hall, over 76,000 migrants have come to the five boroughs seeking refuge, over the past year. The city started a new initiative to house migrants in upstate New York hotels and pay for the costs through August. But that was met with criticism from local officials, who say that the city won’t be able to manage the high influx of migrants after August. Other government leaders also claimed that it is illegal to house migrants in hotels.

Mayor Adams says he continues to look into alternate options to house migrants.
