(New York, NY) — The MTA says it continues to deal with a huge fare evasion problem on both buses and down below on the subways. The “New York Times” reports that on a typical day in New York, some 700-thousand people don’t pay their bus fare and another 400-thousand people skip paying the fare to ride the subway. Last month the transit agency detailed some of the staggering loses due to fare cheats. Some of the losses could be made up if New York institutes congestion pricing next year. That plan would charge drivers to go South of 60th Street in Manhattan. The money raised from the new tolls would go into the MTA’s pocket.
