(New York, NY) – Reports say hundreds of migrants had to be evacuated from a former state prison in Manhattan that’s being used as a temporary shelter, after the building’s plumbing “exploded.” It happened sometime Saturday afternoon, just days after the Lincoln Correction Facility had welcomed newly-arrived migrants.
On Thursday, the facility opened its doors for shelter purposes, after closing as a prison in 2019. The city and state are looking for space, with hundreds of migrants arriving daily. A massive hangar at JFK Airport is being used as of this weekend. It was formerly used by the U.S. Postal Service.
By late Saturday, a City Hall spokesman said the plumbing issues had been resolved and migrants who remained on site were able to go back into the former prison.
