(New York, NY) – Officials are asking swimmers to remain cautious along the Seven Mile Island in Cape May County, after a girl from Pennsylvania was bitten by a shark last weekend. It happened in Stone Harbor, as the 15-year-old was surfing, on Sunday afternoon.
The girl suffered lacerations to her left foot and calf, and got six stitches. She was about 50 feet from shore and her leg was dangling over the side of her surfboard. It was near 109th Street in Stone Harbor. Beaches remain open in both Stone Harbor and neighboring Avalon.
Officials say it was likely a relatively small shark. Experts also say it likely didn’t intend to bite a human, and instead mistook the girl’s foot for a fish or other small creature.
